Dean Brown Pintail Drake

California decoy folk art at its finest…A solid carved pintail drake by Dean Brown (Alameda, CA) ca. 1940. Brown was an outlaw market hunter during the depression. In the late 30s he turned to decoy making after he had several friends arrested for the then illegal act. Brown made some unique early California decoys and they are well documented on pages 237-241 of Wildfowl Decoys of California by Michael Miller. Measures 17” in length. This example is in good and original paint with nice comb painting on the back.
