Mint Mason Challenge Broadbill

This one is stone mint!  A Mason Decoy Company, challenge grade broadbill circa 1910.  There is even ink on the bottom of the decoy where it was wrapped in newspaper from the factory!  There may be an area on the side of the wide spatulate bill, about 1/4" that was repaired as it shows up off color under a black light.  Unused.

A very nice pintail drake by Richard "Fresh-Air Dick" Janson (Sonoma, CA) circa 1930's.  From the collection of Jack Amato.  Excellent all original condition with the exception of what I believe to be paint strengthening on some of the grey areas on the back and one side of the bill.  Please see my biography page for more information on this maker.

St. Valentine's Day Rig Gus Moak Canvasback

Hollow carved drake canvasback by Gus Moak (Tustin, WI) circa 1920.  1 of 19 "St. Valentine's Day Rig" to surface in Milwaukee in the late 1990's.  Among the finest example of Moaks work with outstanding original paint, unique tail pattern and a very folky style.  Very slight rub to the paint at the tip of the bill and tight crack in the neck.

A rare and highly desirable Pacific Coast decoy...A Captain Olsen (Eureka, CA) Pacific Black Brant, circa 1890.  Hollow redwood construction with an inletted neck, carved shoulders and life-like carved, inserted hardwood dowel bill.  See pages 134-135 of Wildfowl Decoys of the Pacific Coast by Miller and Hanson, The Great Book of Wildfowl Decoysby Engers and Decoys A North American Surveyby Kangas.  I've been collecting for about 15 years and have only seen these wonderful California brant come available twice.

Horace Crandall Miniature Mallard

Horace "Hie" Crandall (Westwood, CA) is recognized as one of the nations premier makers of decorative miniatures.  Offered here is a great, all original, drake mallard circa mid 1950's to 1960's.  The bird itself (without driftwood base) measures 3 3/4" in length by 3" tall.  A very rare offering.  Signed on driftwood base.

Alec Ashley Canvasback

Tag on the bottom reads..."Canvasback Drake, Circa 1935.  Carved by Alec Ashley - 1902-1985.  Vallejo, California.  Also a nickname of "Fat" Ashley.  Carved mostly canvasback decoys and a few pintails.  Approximately 200 in all.  Retired from Mare Island Ship Yard in 1965.  Hunted Suisun Bay and the Napa River near the Old Destroyer and tributaries.  He once sold an ark to Richard "Fresh Air Dick" Janson famous carver of Sonoma Creek.  This quoted by Harry Cook, famous old time carver of Vallejo."  Page 156 of Wildfowl Decoys of the Pacific Coast by Miller and Hanson.

Here's a folksy unknown similar to the work of A.J. Mizz (Whidbey Island, WA).  Beautiful all original paint.  Species would be expected to be a mallard hen but this one bears some resemblance to a black duck.
